Your financial wellbeing MOT: five smart moves to make now

We’re over halfway through 2025, and it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on your overall financial wellbeing – and where you’d like to be. So here are five smart financial moves worth considering. If anything’s changed since you last visited your finances, taking the time to review things now could offer peace of mind. Your future self might just thank you for it.

1. Protect what matters most

There’s nothing we can do to stop life happening, for better or worse. But, we do have control over how we prepare ourselves. If you haven’t already, taking out a protection plan – whether that’s life cover, income protection, or critical illness cover – could help safeguard you and your family. This support might help loved ones to cover bills or other expenses if you’re unable to help. Well worth considering.

2. Reassess spending habits

Changes in your spending patterns or income could affect your savings, investment capacity, or emergency fund. It’s also a great time to redirect surplus income towards higher priorities, such as retirement planning, to ensure your money’s working harder. Whatever’s on the horizon for you and your family, it’s important to think about both your long and short-term financial plans.

3. Maximise your allowances

From pensions and ISAs, to Capital Gains Tax exemptions, your annual allowances can be a great way to keep more of your hard-earned money for you and your family. Taking full advantage could help grow and protect your wealth more efficiently. Take time to review where you are currently, and if there’s a shortfall, consider maxing out what you’re entitled to. Please remember, tax rules can change and the impact of taxation depends on your circumstances and where you live.

4. Revisit your goals

Are your financial objectives – both short and long term – still aligned with where you’re headed? Whether life’s thrown a curveball, or you’re simply ahead of schedule, a quick review now can help you stay sharp and intentional for the rest of the year.
